Excerpt
Today is the last day I will allow myself to feel sorrow, the last day I will shed tears, because tears don’t change anything. I need to harvest whatever strength I have and hold it tight. I’m a mother who has an infant that needs me to be both mom and dad.
One day, they say. One day this will stop hurting.
Lies.
This will never be okay or stop hurting.
I’ll never be the same. The woman I was before died the minute the knock on the door came. I’m a shell of the woman I was. The woman who was loving, open, and full of hope is gone. Hope is a weak bitch who couldn’t give two fucks about what you want. So I rely on faith. Faith that I’ll make it through this and find my heart again.

HERO (The Billionaire Salvation Series Book 1) {Book Review}

Title HERO (The Billionaire Salvation Series Book 1)

Author: Bella Love-Wins

Genre: Contemporary Romance, New Adult

Book Description:

This is a contemporary, new adult romance serial. For 18+ readers.

Kate Samuel thought she had left it all behind. The life of a billionaire's daughter, and her incessant search for her macho hero type.

When she saved a neighbor's young son during a fire at her new row house home in lower Manhattan, everything changed. And firefighter Lieutenant Matt Lewis made it all the more confusing.

Yeah…he was hotter than any man she imagined being with, but could he be just like the rest of the hero heart-breakers?

Find out by reading HERO, Book 1 of The Billionaire Salvation Series. Note: This is the first of a least 4 books in the serial.

Sexual content and swearing. 18+. Cliffhanger.

My Review:

This is the second book I have read from author Bella Love-Wins. This is also the first book in this series of serials. So these reviews of mine for these first four books are probably be shorter than usual. In this book we get to know Kate and Matt

Kate is a day dreaming radio host who is supposedly running away from her past. And who just happens to stumble upon her house that is burning down and just happens to save the boy next door. I'm not sure after reading this first installment if I like Kate or not. Not only is she a day dreamer, she tends to talk to herself a lot in her head.

We get to know Matt a little bit in this story. I liked him a little bit more than Kate. He's a firefighter, a business man, demanding, and sexy all rolled into one.

I'd give HERO a 3 out of 5 stars. This was a good start to this series and thought the author had a good plot for the story. I do have to say this first part was about kinda getting to know the characters some. Also there's a lot of details in this part. Also there's some really steamy scenes.

Also be Warned as there's a warning at the beginning of this there is a Huge cliffhanger. So be ready to start the second installment right away!!!

You can purchase HERO on Amazon

Synopsis

Fear.
It's the last thing I remembered.
I was afraid.
Afraid to fight, afraid to run… afraid to breathe.
Then, everything had gone dark. As if life was finally hearing my pleas, my cries to end the torment. To end the fear.
But even in the dark, I still felt it.
I always felt it.
My life had been a ricochet of one event leading to the next. Bouncing back and forth from good to bad. Happiness to despair. Hope to fear.
My name is Arianna West. I'm stronger now. Steady. Alive.
I can find a way to survive on my own. I can see what is coming for me. I can channel my fear into strength.
Except… I didn't see Jack.
And Jack changed everything.
For readers 18+ due to language, violence, and sexual content.

I laughed. A laugh so deep that the muscles in my abdomen flexed. How long had it been since I had felt that? Too long. I hadn't really laughed in a long time and something so simple had brought it out of me.
Jack had brought it out of me.
"God, I missed that laugh," Jack whispered.
I went silent, so suddenly that my breath couldn't keep up and it came rushing out with the emotion that had been built up inside of me.
Tears immediately sprang to my eyes and the heaviness in my chest was back.
My life had changed so much. Everything had changed.
"Jack..."
"Ari, please don't cry."
He had turned his body towards me and was holding my face in his hands. The tears running down my cheeks didn't make it far. He wiped each one away.
He saw the moment my control slipped and I just couldn't seem to stop the tears. That's when he pulled me into his arms. Arms that had always made everything better. Strong fingers combed through my hair, down my temple, across my jaw, then retraced their way back up and into my hair once more. He was giving me whatever comfort he could while I sobbed on his chest.
I should have been embarrassed about the quick change in my mood. I should have felt ridiculous. Childish. With Jack, though, I never had to worry about being anyone but myself no matter who I was now.
"So much is gone," I said in a broken and weak voice. "So much is missing from me."
"No, Ari. You're still in there, babe, just a little harder to reach."
I shook my head. In denial? I wasn't sure. He was only half right.
"I've bent too far for too long. I'm broken," I whispered. So much regret came pouring out of me and I couldn't control it.
I had been slowly breaking for three years and my determination to move on was waning much faster than I could ever keep up with.
Jack buried his fingers in my hair and I felt the press of his lips on the top of my head. When he spoke, the tone of his voice sounded defeated. Resigned. "The world breaks everyone, and afterward, many are strong at the broken places."
I sniffed as the rumble in his chest vibrated against my cheek. His shirt was wet from my tears and I knew I looked like a mess, but I looked up at him anyway.
"What is that from?" I asked.
"What? You don't think I could come up with something so profound by myself?" he teased.
"I know damn well you could, Jack."
He looked at me for a moment, his eyes searching mine and his fingers sweeping a lock of hair back behind my ear. If I didn't know any better, I would think he was reading my mind, seeing all my secrets, all my broken places. "It's Ernest Hemingway. He said that."
"Do you believe it?"
"I do. So much so that I tattooed it on my shoulder the first chance I got," he mumbled with a short chuckle.
I glanced down at his shoulder. It was too dark to see much of anything, but the moonlight streaming in the window showed enough when he lifted his shirt sleeve. The words were there, permanently inked into his skin just above a complex shape that I couldn't quite make out.

About The Author

I live in Morgan Utah with my husband, daughter, and dog, Kolo. I write as often as my active daughter will let me and my husband has the patience of a saint. I find inspiration from dreams, people I meet, and life experiences. When I write, I usually end up drinking one too many cans of Peace Tea, eating three too many Fruit by the Foot fruit snacks, and accidently kicking my pup and best buddy, Kolo, too many times since he loves to sleep under my desk at my feet. I started writing as a teen, but my fear of the unknown won out every time and I threw everything out. After becoming a mother and deciding to stay at home to raise my beautiful little girl, I tried again when I couldn't stop thinking of ideas. I loved every minute, every hour of sleep lost, and every character that came to life in my mind. It's strange, but my favorite moments are when I have writer's block because I can turn to my husband and find inspiration through him by just doing what we do best together. Talking, laughing, and just being in love. He doesn't like to read, but he never stops encouraging me to keep going. Writing has become an important part of my life and every book has a special place in my heart.

Author Bio

As an only child, Autumn kept herself entertained by making up all sorts of stories. For a long time, life and school dimmed her enthusiasm for creative writing. But as soon as she rediscovered her love of storytelling, she put her fingers to the keyboard and hasn’t looked back.

Her favorite books to read are mystery, thrillers, horror, romance, erotica and urban fantasy.

Her favorite thing to write is romance. All of her stories have to include a hunky hero and an optimistic ending.

When she’s not writing, Autumn spends time listening to music, going to concerts, and driving her family nuts. She enjoys reading, gardening, acting, and collecting nail polish. (Her husband says she shouldn’t be allowed to include gardening in her list of hobbies, because she makes him do all the work, but that’s not relevant.)

Autumn lives in Upstate New York with her husband and their three rescue dogs. She is actively involved with several dog rescue groups and her local RWA chapter.

EXCERPT
It was Saturday evening, and Tara was torn. She didn’t know if she could go out on their movie night and act like everything was normal. What bothered her even more was she really was jealous of Kevin and Amy going on a date, and she had no reason to feel that way. She finally picked up her cell phone and typed in a text message to Kevin.
Tara: Hey Kev, not feeling well. Just gonna stay home. Maybe next month.
She put her cell phone down and stared at it as if waiting for it to miraculously chime to confirm he had left a reply. After several minutes of sitting there and seeing no response, she turned on the television and unmuted it, then laid back and sprawled out on the couch. She was in lounge pants and a tank top, already dressed for bed. The time alone was good, although she was not looking forward to hearing about his date. She flipped through channels, until she came across a station that just read Breaking News. She turned it up, stopping on the channel.

“Another grizzly murder has taken place today. We’re reporting live on the corner of Broderick and Schaeffer Street, where the body of 23 year old Derek Jeffries was discovered in the woods two hours ago. He was reported missing forty-eight hours earlier. There are no suspects, as of yet. However, the police have asked the public to come forward if they witnessed anything. One eye witness has reported she saw a man with a red hoodie and the trim of a blue baseball cap coming out of the woods, just an hour before the body was discovered. The witness was not able to recall any other information about the identity of the possible suspect. Reporting live, this is Parker Jacobs.”

Tara turned off the television. She couldn’t believe there was another murder, and so soon. Their small town had rarely experienced any violent crimes in the twenty-two years she had grown up there. In fact, she couldn’t recall a time there was ever a killing. She heard the doorbell and got up to answer it. When she opened up the door, Kevin stood gawking at her. He looked her up and down.
“It doesn’t appear you are ready to go to the movies.”
“Didn’t you get the message? I’m not going. I sent you a text,” she replied, moving away from the door.
He stepped into the house.
“I got your message, but I didn’t think you were being serious. I know how much you want to go to this movie. It’s a romantic comedy…isn’t it?”
She heaved a sigh. “Yes, but…”
“You have no reason not to go.” Again he looked her up and down. “Other than the fact you’re dressed for bed. But you can fix that quickly. Come on, I want to take you out.”
Tara groaned, frustrated.
“Whatever,” she said. “Give me ten minutes.”
She hurried up the stairs and into her bedroom to look for something to wear. She finally settled on a simple University of Alaska t-shirt and a pair of jean shorts. She put some lipstick and mascara on, brushed her hair quickly, and headed back downstairs.
“So how was your date yesterday?” she asked with some sarcasm.
Kevin laughed, turning to her before opening the front door.
“Tell me the truth. It really bothered you, didn’t it?”
Tara was thrown by his question. She figured he’d leave well enough alone. She looked at him in mild disdain, rolling her eyes as she searched for an answer.
“It didn’t bother me. I just…” She paused, knowing she wasn’t telling him the truth. “Maybe it bothered me a little bit.” She hesitated. “But, just a little.”
He laughed. “I’ll take that.”
He waited on the porch for her to lock up, and put his arm over her shoulders as they headed to his car.
“Let’s just put it this way. After yesterday, I’m sure Amy knows where we stand.” He opened the door for her, and she met his eyes.
“How so?” she asked, smiling.
“It’s possible I might have mentioned your name a couple of times during the conversation.”
“A couple?”
“Five…six times max, but that’s all.”
She snickered, getting into the car. She felt relieved, but all the more curious to hear how it went.
***
Sitting in the theatre next to Tara, Kevin found it difficult to ignore his feelings for her. He regretted not telling her how he felt. It probably wasn’t a good idea to take her to a romantic comedy movie. As the couple made out on the big screen, he pictured them as the two in the starring roles. He glanced at her out of the corner of his eye, and could see she was probably uncomfortable as well.
At one point, he could swear she groaned next to him. Kevin perked up, now more aware of his erection pressing against his zipper. He shifted his body in his chair, but nothing seemed to help. He reached his hand into the popcorn container, trying to take his mind off of it. That didn’t help. His hand grazed across Tara’s. He froze for a moment, and then allowed his fingers to slowly stroke hers. He was longing to touch her. He hoped she felt the same way.
His fingers traced hers up and down and when he looked over at her, their eyes met. The moment their eyes connected, Tara was torn from the trance. She pulled her hand out of the bucket and turned back to the movie screen. The moment was lost.
Kevin tried to turn back to the screen and watch what was going on, but the couple was now doing a lot more than kissing. He moaned as he saw their foreplay, knowing a sex scene was imminent. This was going to be too much to take. He just knew it. He shifted again in his seat, accidentally brushing her leg. His hand trailed down her bare leg and instead of quickly pulling away, he allowed it to linger. What was even more shocking was she didn’t try to move away.
As his hand slid back up her leg, he let his fingers slip past the seam of her shorts, gently grazing her thigh. Their eyes met and she made no attempt to stop him. He drifted up a tad more, feeling the silk of her panties and then falling back. His hand pulled out from under her shorts. His anxiety mounted, as did his excitement. They never looked away from each other. Kevin looked at her with shock and pleasure as she moved her hand toward him and cupped her hand on his jeans, right over his throbbing hardness. Kevin moaned, closing his eyes and taking a deep breath. He opened his eyes to find her staring at him.  She appeared as lost in the moment as he was.

EXCERPT
There was so little noise outside, it was almost peaceful. No car horns. Barely any city traffic. No screaming people. Just the rustling of a slight winter breeze that wove its way around the tall buildings nearby. I closed my eyes and briefly took in the quiet. As great as it was sitting in the safety of Matt’s comforting warmth, it wasn’t long before my mind wandered back to George and Richard. They were out there somewhere.
“I’m going up to have a shower, okay?” I told Matt.
“Sure. You’re worried about them, aren’t you?”
“Yeah,” I answered. I pulled out of his embrace and stood up to go back inside.
“You go ahead,” he said. He looked at his watch. “I’ll wait until after dinner.”
I leaned down and kissed him, then went inside and up to my room. I heard the elevator chime just before I closed my door. It meant Matt would be busy, so I had some time. I took out the phone Matt gave me, and the piece of paper I had used to scribble down the phone number. I knew that eventually, Matt would find out what I was about to do. I looked at the two items in my hand, and briefly wondered how much of Matt’s trust I was about to strip away.
I thought that he’d just have to understand that I had no choice but to do this. I opened the text application of the phone and keyed in the number. I sent the simple text message.
This is Kate Samuel. What exactly do you want from me? Do you have George and Richard Wilkinson? If you do, please let them go.
I looked at the message and hesitated for a short time. I quickly hit the send button and hoped I wasn’t making things worse. There was no reply right away, so I tucked the phone and piece of paper into my purse and went to the next room to find some clothes to change into after my shower. I picked out a simple, two-piece cotton pajama pant set, and a sweater and jeans to wear the next day. I took the things back to my room and undressed in the room before going into the shower.

*********************

I left the bathroom and wore my towel to get dressed in the bedroom. Fuck, I thought as I walked into the room. I really fucked up now. Matt was standing beside the bed. My purse was open on the bed and the phone he gave me was in the hand he held up to me.
“Why did you take out the phone?” I asked as I towel-dried my hair. I was doing my best to be nonchalant.
“I came up here to call you down for dinner,” he said. “The phone was ringing, so I answered.”
“Why did you do that?” Inside, my stress was mounting. I was in deep shit.
“I just gave you the phone to use an hour ago, Kate. I thought it was one of my staff or my assistant. I wasn’t going to answer at first, but it kept ringing, so I did.”
“So who was it?” I asked, pretending to be innocent.
“You know who it was, Kate,” he did nothing to contain any of his disappointment or anger. “What have you done?”
“What did they say?” I could deal with his anger another time. If they took the time to call back, there was a chance we could bargain with them.
He could barely look at me.
“You just put us and your friends in more danger, Kate.” So much for diplomacy and mincing words.
Hero contempt.
“What do you mean?”
“The person on the other end said, ‘You can run but you can’t hide. You and your bitch are dead,’ then hung up and sent us a text with a picture of an amputated finger.”
I gasped in horror. “You don’t think it’s... ”
“I don’t know if they hurt your friends. I called Bateman. Get dressed. He’s on his way over. I requested that he send some officers to come and help my team keep watch.” He sat on the bed, exasperated.
“I…I’m sorry, Matt,” I admitted.
All my hope was deflated. And I felt brand new waves of guilt from my most recent transgression. I put on the sweater and jeans, knowing I would probably not be sleeping anytime soon. I sat beside him, hoping the proximity would help him understand why I did it.
“I thought I could help by trying…”
“You were wrong, Kate,” he said as he stood and began pacing the floor. “You didn’t help. You did exactly what you promised not to do only hours ago. Now they know where we are. And you’ve probably compromised whatever the police may have intended to do.”
Matt’s own phone rang and he ignored it the first time. When it rang again, he tilted it to see who was calling. It was his security team leader.  Detective Bateman was downstairs.
